TENNESSEE BC-A RESIDENTIAL CONTRACTOR

Residential building contractors are those whose services are limited to construction, remodeling, repair or improvement of 1,2,3, or 4 family unit residences under four stories in height.


TENNESSEE BC-AB (LARGE B) RESIDENTIAL/COMMERCIAL CONTRACTOR

A residential/commercial building contractor is authorized to bid on and contract for the construction, erection, alteration, repair or demolition of any building or structure for use and occupancy by the general public. Excludes industrial work.


TENNESSEE BC-AB (SMALL B) RESIDENTIAL SMALL COMM CONTRACTOR

This license covers everything in the BC-A Residential Contractor and the BC-b Small Commercial license. Residential building contractors are those whose services are limited to construction, remodeling, repair or improvement of 1,2,3, or 4 family unit residences under four stories in height. A small commercial building contractor is authorized to bid on and contract for the construction, erection, alteration, repair or demolition of any building or structure for use and occupancy by the general public, including residential construction with more than 4 units, and greater than 3 stories in height with a monetary limit of $1,500,000.


TENNESSEE BC-B COMMERCIAL CONTRACTOR

A commercial building contractor is authorized to bid on and contract for the construction, erection, alteration, repair or demolition of any building or structure for use and occupancy by the general public, including residential construction with more than 4 units, and greater than 3 stories in height. With this license, the contract may also perform any of the 34 building subcategories for "commercial". The NASCLA exam is also acceptable by Tennessee for the BC-B classification.


TENNESSEE COMMERCIAL CONTRACTOR NASCLA

Any contract over $25,000 in Tennessee requires a contractor license. This license will allow the builder to bid on, build, or modify any type of commercial structure in Tennessee. This exam will also serve as your trades exam for AL, AR, AZ, FL, GA, LA, MS, NC, NV, OR, SC, TN, UT, VA, WV, and the US Virgin Islands. Of those states listed, only Alabama, South Carolina, and Tennessee require a separate license for residential construction. The NASCLA exam is acceptable by Tennessee for the BC-B classification.


TENNESSEE BC-B SMALL COMMERCIAL CONTRACTOR

A small commercial building contractor is authorized to bid on and contract for the construction, erection, alteration, repair or demolition of any building or structure for use and occupancy by the general public, including residential construction with more than 4 units, and greater than 3 stories in height with a monetary limit of $1,500,000. This limit was increased in April 2017.


TENNESSEE BC-BC COMMERCIAL INDUSTRIAL CONTRACTOR

A contractor under this classification is authorized to bid on and contract for the erection, alteration, repair and demolition of buildings or structures used for commercial or industrial production, and service. May also take a BC combined exam to cover all building trades.


TENNESSEE BC-C INDUSTRIAL CONTRACTOR

A contractor under this classification is authorized to bid on and contract for the erection, alteration, repair and demolition of buildings or structures used for industrial production, and service, such as manufacturing plants.


TENNESSEE BC-COMBINED (RESIDENTIAL, COMMERCIAL, INDUSTRIAL) CONTRACTOR

The "BC" combined classification is commonly referred to as a General contractor. It covers everything in the BC-A, BC-B, and BC-C licenses for residential, commercial, and industrial contractors.


TENNESSEE BUSINESS AND LAW

The business law exam is required for all licenses in TN.
