Tennessee BC-A Residential Contractor Requirements & Application

* A Tennessee contractor's license is required when the total cost or contract amount is $25,000 or more.

Monetary limits for each license as follows:

* 10 times working capital OR 10 times net worth – whichever is LESS

* If the requested monetary limit is $3,000,000 or less, a reviewed financial statement is required.

* If the requested monetary limit is greater than $3,000,000 an audited financial statement is required.

* A Tennessee contractor's license is not granted solely on meeting one requirement. All requirements must be met (exams, financials, experience, etc) and all information submitted is considered

Tennessee has established reciprocity for the BC-A license with Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and North Carolina.

Tennessee BC-A Residential Contractor Permitted Work

Residential building contractors are those whose services are limited to construction, remodeling, repair, or improvement of one, two, three, or four family unit residences, not exceeding three stories in height and accessory use structures in connection therewith. Residential contractors may bid on any of the 34 building subcategories, as long as it is "residential".
